This document records sanitization information entered by the operator. It does not independently verify that any asset was sanitized or destroyed.

What DestructLog Does

DestructLog generates sanitization records from asset data you provide. The tool accepts CSV data via its API — serial numbers, media types, and sanitization methods are validated against the NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 media sanitization decision matrix — and produces a numbered record (format: DEST-YYYYMMDD-NNN) with per-asset details, NIST citations, and summary counts. No account is required, and asset data is not stored.

How to Generate a Sanitization Record

  1. Prepare your asset list — export from your inventory system as CSV with columns for serial number, make/model, media type, sanitization method, date, and verifier.
  2. Submit your data — send the CSV to DestructLog via the API. The tool parses the data, maps column headers automatically, and validates each row against NIST 800-88 rules.
  3. Receive the document — a numbered sanitization record is returned with per-asset detail, method-media validation results, summary counts, and NIST citations.

The document states plainly that it records what the operator entered and does not itself verify that any asset was sanitized.

Who Uses Sanitization Documentation?

IT asset disposition (ITAD) vendors, corporate IT departments, data center operators, and managed service providers document the sanitization of drives, tapes, and other media to meet policy and audit requirements. An auditor reviewing your disposition process expects to see specifics: which assets were sanitized, by what method, on what date, and who verified it. A sanitization record with per-asset detail answers those questions.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 defines three sanitization categories — Clear, Purge, and Destroy — and specifies which methods apply to which media types. DestructLog embeds those rules so your documentation reflects the standard.
